Elections in Zambia

In his maiden speech Banda was quick to say that he was glad that he gave his speech before Obama did otherwise people would said that he copied from him. Well that is his grandiosity and likening himself to the great Obama. The height of the US election is farfetched from the African synthetic generic democracy. It is synthetic because it is still far to reach the hem of the US democracy. One funny thing I discovered in their elections was that the electorate donated funds for campaigns whilst here in Zambia it is the opposite; the candidates were seen donating to the electorate “corruption”. We are still a thousand miles to reach to the level of maturity.

Hey I was trying to analyze the slogans of our elections. “Continuity with Mwanawasa legacy” – Rupiah Banda. “Less tax more money in your Pocket” – Michael Sata, “Economic emancipation and education”- Hakainde
All these centre around poverty and its ugly face. The factor of poverty shall remain constant in Zambian and African politics. Rupiah's claim of continuity is unfounded; he talks of the legacy, what legacy? Load shading eight hours per day – distasteful. Sata- it is not just possible to reduce tax and increase money in people’s pockets without explaining the mechanism - rhetoric lie. It made sense to hear the matrix of economic issues from Hakainde – sensible

The problem affecting most of the electorate in Zambia is illiteracy and failure to articulate issues at a central point of view, the implications and benefits of it all.
Its not until we start working towards poverty reduction, increase in literacy levels the people will still remain electing selfish leaders who thrive on the majority’s ignorance especially those in rural areas.
