What will happen to us?

Zimbabweans spend all their time at the moment talking in open and helpless disbelief that the elections are being stolen from them. Despite all the obvious proof of cheating, SADC cannot or will not do anything to help us because they are frightened of Mugabe. Thabo Mbeki has proved that he is not following a path of ‘quiet diplomacy’; he is in league with ZANU-PF. And Zimbabweans will not take to the streets because that is not in our personality. MDC is stuck.

The situation is unsustainable and businesses are grinding to a halt. Some people say the situation will be resolved within a few days: others say it will be all over by Christmas - but people said that of the First World War which turned into five years of bloody slaughter.

We at GALZ have come to work today. We don’t have any opinion about the possible effectiveness of the national strike but we feel that it is more useful for us to be working. I don’t know whether that is right or wrong.

We don’t know what is going to happen in the long run but something has to give. At the moment we don’t know what that is but it surely will be linked to the economy. The alternative is that Mugabe will die in office having destroyed the country he liberated. But, then aagain, hisotry is full of strange twists.
