The last day of Highway Africa 2009 is here and I have to admit I’m really enjoying myself and sad to see the conference ending so soon. The topics and people are equally engaging. I often feel isolated and a bit disconnected from the tech advances that are occurring in my home country (USA) while in Zambia but conferences like these get me energized about ....
Day three finds us at the start of Highway Africa 2009. The DCI has ended and we have officially kicked things off for Highway with last night’s tour and “media mixer” (as it was being called) of Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Port Elizabeth sponsored by MTN. It’s a massive stadium, state of the art, clean design and as World Cup Organizing Committee CEO Dr. Danny Jordaan would say...
Day two of the Digital Citizen’s Indaba finds Justin waiting for it to begin. I arrived early (7:30) at the Eden Grove building to check mail and post another blog but I found it locked. So I grabbed an open laptop computer sitting idly at this fancy, brand new MTN kiosk (sadly without Internet access).
After a two hour flight and bus ride this morning, the Digital Citizen's Indaba has officially begun. Sat through some interesting presentations this afternoon, all of which focused on civil society and their uptake of new media strategies and tools to aid in their work. Had I had the opportunity to voice my opinion I would have suggested that podcasts or radio programs...
Today (Day Two) of this HIVOS Citizen Journalism in Africa workshop saw us review how the media works (i.e. what's newsworthy, who are the news gatekeepers, etc) and what specific techniques can be used to "make" news.
