FEMRITE is a literary organization that collaborates with several literary associations in Uganda and abroad to promote Ugandan culture. These include National Book Trust of Uganda, Uganda Children Writers and Illustrators Association, the National Library of Uganda, East African Book Development Association, International PEN Ugandan Chapter, Uganda Literature Fraternity, Uganda Publisher’s Association. It also supports activities that improve on the reading and writing culture of Uganda.

Each year FEMRITE organizes a Week of Literary Activities that is aimed at highlighting and celebrating literary achievements in Uganda and Africa and the Diaspora. The Week has also been an important avenue connecting FEMRITE to other institutions in and outside Uganda.

It has grown into an empowering platform and Training ground for Ugandans interested in contributing to Uganda’s literary heritage. FEMRITE is the brainchild of the Founding member and current president, Hon Mary Karooro Okurut with the support of partners and committed members who have Seen it grow from strength through their vision of Building a platform for women writers to contribute to national development through creative writing.

Major achievements of FEMRITE since its inception:

1. 24 Publications
2. Ten members have won international and national literary awards.
3. FEMRITE books are on the syllabi of Institutes of Higher Learning.
4. Dissertations have been written by nationals and foreign scholars on FEMRITE.
5. Organised 15 creative writing workshops.
6. Organised a writers’ residence with female writers from 8 African countries.
7. Skills workshops have been organized for numerous women.
8. FEMRITE has received an award from the Makerere University Gender Mainstreaming Division for Best Practices in Women Empowerment.
9. Over ten development partners are associating with FEMRITE in supporting her programmes. 10. Works with primary and secondary schools.
