A Copperbelt University student has committed suicide in Kitwe’s Riverside Extension.

A CBU student who was in the second year of his academic programme, hanged himself on Tuesday 26th January at his parents home after the Zambia National Football Team went down 4 -5 in a post-match penalty shoot-out with the Super Eagles of Nigeria.

The student was watching the match with friends and returned home immediately after the game, complaining about why Zambia’s defender failed to convert the penalty that lost them the game.

After complaining to his sisters and brothers who were in his custody in the absence of his uncle, the student went outside the house. The uncle, who works for CBU, was reported to be in Lusaka at the time.

Later that night it was discovered that the student had gone out and hanged himself using the Zambian scarf. He was found dead.

Efforts to get a comment from his uncle failed, as he was still in Lusaka at the time.

The police were unable to give details of the death, since they were still carrying out investigations to establish officially the cause of death.
