On the second day of the Mobilising Social Justice Conference, Frankie Jenkins presented the outcomes of his study on the budget processes in the South African parliament. He also talked about the role of civil interventions in enhancing accountability of parliament. He argued that the right to participate is entrenched in the Constitution and an obligation on both Houses of Parliament to facilitate meaningful public participation.

The republic of Uganda budget for the financial year 2009/2010 was released on Thursday June 12, 2009. The theme for this year is “Enhancing strategic interventions to improve business climate and revitalize production to achieve prosperity for all”.
The first ever female Minister of Finance, planning and economic development in Uganda, Hon Syda Bbumba delivered the budget speech at the Kampala Serena Hotel.

Each time a higher denomination is introduced illegal foreign currency dealers are in the habit of raising the exchange rate. The injection of the ZW$10 trillion, ZW$50 trillion and ZW$100 trillion notes has seen them now exchanging $1 United States for ZW$800 billion up from around ZW$200. It has also become the norm in the country that when a new note is introduced all service providers price their goods in line with the highest denomination introduced by the RBZ.

A mature media sector identifies itself by pluralistic, ethical behaviour and professional journalism. Even though press freedom is growing, the media environment in Tanzania is still a long way from realising these principles.

Although leaders may have shaken hands, the pressing reality for Zimbabweans today, four months down the line from the 29 March harmonised polls, is coping with the economic crisis. The optimism for better lives  - characterised by more food, medicines, clean water, banks notes, transport and all other basic necessities - has all but dissipated.
