Suppression of Terrorism Act of 2002
The 2002 Suppression of Terrorism Act defines terrorism very widely, and provides for severe penalties for suspected terrorists. There are fears that it could be used against, political opponents, and to muzzle the media. For example, the promotion of news that could "promote terrorism"carries a penalty of up to ten years in prison.
The outlaws any coverage of any person or organisation gazetted as engaged in terrorism. Journalists have criticized the act for preventing journalists from reporting on clashes between the government and rebel groups without risking a prison sentence.
