Zanzibar Broadcasting Commission Act of 1997
This Act establishes the Zanzibar Broadcasting Commission (ZBC) -- the regulatory body for broadcasting in Zanzibar.
Article 7 describes its functions which include:
- issuing broadcasting licences;
- regulating and supervising broadcasting activities;
- protecting the culture and traditions of Zanzibar;
- inspecting broadcasters;
- giving necessary directions to broadcasters.
Article 15(3) of the Act is effectively a code of conduct for broadcasters and provisions matching those of the mainland legislation.
Article 12(1) sets limitations on ownership and stipulates that any corporate entity
holding a broadcasting licence must have at least 20% of its shares held by the Government of Zanzibar.
