Know Your Constitution

Know your Constitution

The renounced human rights educator, activist and The Post Newspaper columnist, Simon Kabanda launched his book at Hotel Edinburgh on 10th August 2008. The book “Know your Constitution” is a collection of articles which were written for newspapers and magazines on the constitution of Zambia and its reform process.
Mr Kabanda encouraged people who attended the launch to take keen interest in knowing the contents of their constitution because of its importance.

He said his desire to write this book arose from what he was taught by his parents early in his childhood, that he belonged to the society and whatever he acquired including knowledge, belonged to the society hence sharing his reflection on the constitution through his book

The book is launched at a time when Zambia is in the process of reversing its constitution again. This is the second time the MMD government is attempting to come up with the people driven constitution. In 1991 when Zambia reverted to Multi-party democracy, the MMD government led by Dr. Frederick Chiluba attempted to come up with what they called “people driven constitution”. But then rejected about 70% of the submissions and recommendations made by the Mwanakatwe Constitution Review Commission.

The current process of reversing the same constitution is the second attempt by the MMD government now under the leadership of president Levy Mwanawasa to come up with a multi-party constitution, but with many disagreements on the adoption process
