Father Bwalya, station manager for the Roman Catholic church-owned Radio Icengelo and former Media Institute of Southern Africa (MISA) Zambia Chairperson was arrested and detained on Wednesday for airing what is being deemed as biased post election analysis. He was charged with conduct likely to cause a breach of peace.

The arrest of the head of a catholic owned radio station spark a near riot in Kitwe, paralysing business in the city. Father Frank Bwalya was arrested yesterday evening as reported by the local media houses.

The head who is a catholic priest was determined to hear his case and reasons for his arrest; he was detained and released today without a charge.

At around 14h00 hours today, immigration officers at the Harare International Airport confiscated travel documents belonging to Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) President, Morgan Tsvangirai, Secretary General, Tendai Biti and the party’s Secretary for Foreign Affairs, Elphat Mukonoweshuro for unspecified reasons.

The book is launched at a time when Zambia is in the process of reversing its constitution again. This is the second time the MMD government is attempting to come up with the people driven constitution.

The Movement for Democratic Change acknowledges the concern about the Zimbabwe crisis expressed in the resolution adopted at the 11th Ordinary Session of the African Union General Assembly. The MDC would like to thank those African leaders who have joined the global chorus by standing on the side of the Zimbabwean people and advocating that their voices be heard.

The Southern African Legal Assistance Network (SALAN) welcomes the stance taken by the Southern African Development Community (SADC)’s call for the postponement of the Zimbabwean Presidential run-off elections scheduled for Friday 27th June 2008, which have been characterized by widespread violence, forcing MDC Presidential candidate Morgan Tsvangirai to announce his withdrawal from the race.
