Mobile technology improves quality of life for HIV positive people

Mobile phones are an asset for communicating health issues in Mexico, where a group of forty people -- some living with HIV and Aids -- have been able to interact with each other through group messaging, offering advice on medication and other HIV related issues that they face on their daily lives. This was shared in a mini talk about the use of group messaging for social change, delivered by Anne Kidd at the MobileActive08 conference in Johannesburg.

HIV and AIDS has continued to impact communities and individuals differently and this can never be over-emphasised. For this reason organisations are coming up with different types of interventions in order to reduce the spread of the pandemic. Games4Life allows young people to learn and understand dangers of HIV and AIDS by playing games on their mobile phones

Medicines for All

Every country in the world is supposed to have an up-to-date list of essential medicines - basic drugs that should be available to all through the public health service. In Africa though, the reality is that drugs are often out of stock in health clinics. In some cases it's a few drugs for a few days, in others almost no drugs are available for months. A group of NGOs from east and southern Africa met in Nairobi this week to formulate a campaign to demand 100% access and availability to all.

The last few days, I've been spending some time with an incredible group of people. These are men and women who work in hospices, in the field of palliative care. The term 'Palliative Care' is not yet widely understood, but it should be. Palliative Care is a special type of care, aimed at improving the quality of life of patients and their families facing problems associated with life limiting illness. It focuses on preventing and relieving suffering.
